Food plots?? Hunting dear and turkey?
whats a good seed mixxture for deer and turkey that will be good for antler growth and then good for the winter also. how big does a small food plot have to be to be productive and help the animals out as well. i was thinking 1/8 –1/4 acre big????????? also would a rake on the back of a tractor be good enough for loosening the soil before i plant because i dont have access to large equiptment back in the forest?
There are three things you need to know.- what to plant,when to plant it and where to plant it. The deer’s preferences vary so much in different areas of the country you need to ask someone in your area that has been planting for a good while for his advice on what to use and when to plant it. The 1/8-1/4 food plot is ideal. Deer seem to prefer the smaller plots,especially the bucks. And it needs to be planted where the sun will shine on it a minimum of 4-5 hrs daily. You will not be able to grow anything in the shade. Most seeds take very little to germinate. So if the soil is not hard pack you can make do with your rake on your tractor. The main concern is getting a rain at the right time after planting. Good luck.
